Biography

Gregory Albright was born in California in 1959. His interest in observing the natural world, coupled with his curiosity for how things work led him to explore both science and art. Not until his second year, at Humboldt State College, did he begin to show the drawings he had previously kept secret. After a year working at the Craft Center on the UC Davis Campus, he moved to attend the San Francisco Art Institute. There he took a BFA in Filmmaking. The following year, Greg learned printmaking at San Francisco State. Greg explored a variety of jobs: gardener, waiter, design assistant, software buyer, crab-fisherman, door maker, tile setter, home re-modeler, and beekeeper. In 1986, he married June Blocklinger. Together they have three Children, Aurisha, Jasper, and Micaela. He and his family moved to Vermont as founding teachers at the Upper Valley Waldorf School in 1992. He completed graduate work at Antioch New England and received his Waldorf Teaching Certificate. Greg worked as a class teacher there for 12 years. Greg continues to teach lively art classes in various disciplines to students and adults in many settings. In 2004 Greg began to focus more on painting and the exhibition of his artwork. He founded a home renovation company to support his family and provide flexibility in his schedule for pursuing art. During the 2005-06 year he designed and built a house, “Lilac Lane”. In 2008, he began a tower addition to his shop and studio, still in process. He maintains a studio in North Hartland, Vermont.

Statement

Inspired by lyrical lines and lively colors, these paintings develop out of my feeling and response to landscape motifs and natural forms. I am inspired by the abundance and working of water in the New England landscape, in contrast to my childhood home in California. I enjoy painting the bucolic moods where I live in Vermont, and imbuing these with idealism and whimsy. The initial drawings serve as a tool for imaginative exploration, and for an occasional glimpse into the spiritual and magic al forces working within our organic world.

My work explores landscape and the moods expressed by the natural world; nature as a force with its own destiny, vitality and independence from humankind. I paint nature as personified in all of its wonder, both real and as I imagine. Especially interesting to me are the seasonal moments that punctuate the year, and the feelings these inspire in us. I often include animals, archetypes, dryads or nudes in my paintings. The discipline of figurative sculpture sensitizes me to the nuances of form and the gestures that result in form. Sculpture informs my painting, and develops my sense of nature's turgidity and motion. Likewise, painting has trained my eye for sculpture and developed sensitivity for detail and value. Color is especially important to me, and a great deal of attention goes into the colors I use in each painting.

Exhibiting work regularly, I can be found represented in public and private collections nationally. I have studied at the San Francisco Art Institute, with the Russian painter, Ludmila Gayvorinsky, and sculptor W.J. Williams at the former studio of Augustus Saint Gaudens. My studio is at the Historic Red Barn in North Hartland.
